{"reader_html":"<h1 class=\"chapter-heading\">The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to Titus<span class=\"chapter-label\">Chapter 1<\/span><\/h1>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><span class=\"dropcap-wrap\" data-v=\"1\"><span class=\"dropcap\" title=\"Compare verse 1 across translations\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,1,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">P<\/span>aul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God&#039;s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"2\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,2,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">2<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"3\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,3,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">3<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"4\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,4,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">4<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"5\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,5,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">5<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"6\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,6,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">6<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"7\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,7,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">7<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"8\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,8,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">8<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"9\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,9,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">9<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"10\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,10,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">10<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"11\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,11,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">11<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre&#039;s sake.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"12\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,12,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">12<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"13\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,17,1,13,&quot;Titus&quot;)\">13<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">This witness is true.
